What a certificate of authenticity proves
If a card came in the box with your stone tool, the first question is who tested what. An independent gemmological laboratory report states which properties were measured, what the species is, and what treatments were detected, and it identifies the specific object it describes. A certificate of authenticity is usually a document the seller wrote about their own goods. These are not variants of the same thing.
What a laboratory report contains
A report from a gemmological laboratory has a recognisable structure, and each element is doing a job.
A description of the specific item, including measurements and weight. This is the element that ties the document to the object. A report describing “one green stone” could accompany any green stone; a report giving dimensions and weight to a fraction of a gram can be checked against the thing in your hand.
A species and variety identification, in gemmological rather than trade language — “nephrite jade”, “jadeite jade”, “serpentine”, “quartzite” — because a laboratory reports what the material is, not what the market calls it. This is precisely the distinction between species and trade name being enforced by a document.
A treatment statement. This is the most valuable line and the most carefully worded. It reports what the applied tests detected, using formulations like “no indications of treatment detected” rather than “untreated”, because the honest claim is about the tests and not about the object’s history.
The methods used. A serious report says how the conclusion was reached — refractive index, specific gravity, spectroscopy, infrared spectroscopy for resin detection.
A report number and a way to verify it. The number should be checkable against the issuing laboratory’s own records, independently of whoever handed you the document.
Notice what is absent. A gemmological report does not normally state a value, it does not grade quality on any absolute scale, and it does not usually state geographic origin, because origin determination is a separate and much harder discipline that is frequently inconclusive.
What a certificate of authenticity contains
Generally, an assertion.
The phrase has no standardised meaning and no issuing authority behind it. A card reading “Certificate of Authenticity — 100% Natural Jade” with a logo and a serial number may be backed by testing, or may be a printed insert produced in quantity and included with every item shipped. Nothing on the face of the document distinguishes the two cases.
Common features that carry no information:
A hologram, seal or embossed foil. Decorative security features. They authenticate the card, at best, and cards are not what is in question.
A serial number that verifies nowhere, or that verifies against a page controlled by the seller. A number is only evidence if an independent party holds the record.
Adjectives without species names. “Genuine”, “authentic”, “natural”, “premium”, “grade A” used without saying grade A of what under which classification. Within the jadeite trade Type A has a precise meaning; the phrase “grade A” on a card next to no species name has none.
No measurements. Without dimensions and weight, a document cannot be tied to an object, and the same document can travel with anything.
Claims a laboratory would not make. Value, origin stated with confidence, or health and metaphysical properties. A report that asserts what a stone does for a person has told you it is not a gemmological document, whatever else it says.

The three failure modes
The document is genuine and describes something else. The commonest problem, and it needs no dishonesty: a report issued for one item circulates with a batch, or a photograph of a report is reused across a product line. This is why measurements matter more than seals.
The document says less than it appears to. “No treatment detected” is not “untreated” — heating and irradiation are frequently undetectable, and a laboratory reporting honestly on those tests is reporting a negative result rather than a positive finding. A report that tested for polymer and found none has said something specific and narrow.
The document is about a different question. A report may identify the species correctly and say nothing about treatment, or address treatment and not origin. Reading a report as answering everything it does not deny is the standard error.
Economics, and the honest position
Here is the part that determines what any of this is worth in practice.
Gemmological testing has a cost per item, and that cost is largely independent of the item’s value. For a small inexpensive stone object, the testing costs more than the object — which means that a genuine individual laboratory report on such an item is economically improbable. Nobody spends more on the document than the goods are worth.
Two conclusions follow, and neither is comfortable.
A card accompanying an inexpensive stone tool is, in the ordinary case, a marketing insert rather than a test result. That is not an accusation about any particular seller; it is what the cost structure predicts, and it applies across the category.
And if the identification genuinely matters to you, the route is to have the object tested yourself, by a laboratory you chose — which is what a gemmologist actually does — accepting that the cost may exceed the value of the object. For most tools, the rational endpoint is the one home examination reaches: the correct bracket, honestly established, and no certificate at all.
The limit
A document cannot be verified by reading it. Its authority comes entirely from the independence of the issuer and from whether it demonstrably describes the object in front of you, and both of those require work outside the document — checking a report number with the laboratory, measuring the piece.
What the paperwork can never do is substitute for the tests. A report is a record of measurements somebody made. If those measurements were not made, or were made on something else, the card is a piece of printing with the same information content as the listing it came from.
