Rose quartz, and what makes it pink

Rose quartz is quartz, silicon dioxide, hardness 7, and its pink comes from microscopic inclusions rather than from anything dissolved in the crystal. The material as it occurs in nature is massive and cloudy, in pale to moderate pink, and that cloudiness is a structural feature rather than a defect. A tool that is clear, evenly saturated and vividly pink is therefore describing something other than ordinary rose quartz.

The mineral

Quartz is one of the most common minerals in the crust: silicon dioxide, Mohs 7, specific gravity about 2.65, no cleavage, conchoidal fracture, vitreous lustre. Every quartz variety shares those properties, because they follow from composition and structure and the varieties differ only in colour and in how the material grew.

Rose quartz is the massive pink variety. It occurs in large bodies rather than as well-formed crystals — which is why rose quartz was for a long time considered not to form crystals at all, though rare crystallised pink quartz does exist and is a collector’s material rather than something carved into objects.

The pink is generally attributed to microscopic fibrous inclusions of a borosilicate mineral related to dumortierite, dispersed through the quartz. Two things follow. The colour is not in the quartz lattice, so it is not a colour centre and does not behave like one; and the inclusions that supply the colour also scatter light, which is what makes the material cloudy. In rose quartz, the colour and the cloudiness have the same cause. They arrive together and cannot be separated.

Where the inclusions are oriented, a well-cut piece can show asterism — a faint six-rayed star in transmitted light. This is genuine and uncommon, and it is a direct consequence of the same inclusions.

Hard, and brittle with it

Quartz is harder than either jade, and much more likely to break. It is a single-phase material with no interlocking fibrous structure to arrest a crack, and it fractures conchoidally into sharp curved surfaces. Hardness and toughness are different properties and rose quartz is the clearest example in the whole set of materials: nothing in a household will scratch it, and a tiled floor will destroy it.

It is also notably sensitive to thermal shock. Rapid temperature change puts the surface under stress relative to the interior, and a brittle material with pre-existing internal fractures — which massive rose quartz frequently has — cracks along them. Any piece with a visible internal veil is carrying a crack already.

Pink things that are not rose quartz

The pink stone market contains several distinct products, and the vocabulary does not separate them.

Dyed quartzite or dyed quartz. Quartzite is a rock of cemented quartz grains, porous enough at grain boundaries to take dye, and dyeing it produces a stronger, more even pink than nature usually manages. The tell is the standard one: dye follows grain boundaries and cracks and pools in a fine web.

Glass. Moulded pink glass is cheap, takes a high polish, and is uniform. It carries spherical bubbles and flowing swirls, both visible under a loupe, and it is softer than quartz.

Manufactured products with quartz in the name. A number of trade names pair “quartz” with a colour or an adjective and denote glass, glass with inclusions, or dyed material. “Cherry quartz” and “pineapple quartz” are commonly used this way. This is the colour-plus-species pattern being used dishonestly, in the one family of trade names that is usually honest.

Synthetic quartz. Quartz is grown industrially in large quantities, and a synthetic piece is quartz by every measurable property. Detecting it requires microscopic examination of growth features and is not always possible even then.

Other pink minerals. Rhodonite, rhodochrosite and pink calcite are all softer, all genuinely different minerals, and all sold as tools. A pink stone that a steel point scratches is not quartz.

What you can establish

The strongest observation in that list is the relationship between colour and clarity. Natural rose quartz gets its colour from the inclusions that make it cloudy, so saturated colour with high clarity is internally inconsistent — the two properties are supposed to trade off, and a stone showing both is telling you the colour came from somewhere else.

What the market is selling

Rose quartz occupies an unusual position: it is abundant and inexpensive as a raw material, and it carries a substantial set of claims about emotional and personal effects in the crystal market. Those claims are attached to the material commercially and are noted here as claims made in marketing, without endorsement and without pursuit — this site is concerned with composition.

What matters for identification is the consequence. The claims are attached to the name, not to a composition, so there is commercial pressure to produce objects that look the part at the lowest possible cost, and the appearance most associated with the name — strong even pink — is the appearance natural material rarely has. That is a good working description of how a market generates imitations.

The limit

You can establish that a pink stone is hard enough to be quartz and that it is not soft enough to be rhodonite or calcite. You can catch glass. You can often catch dye. You cannot confirm that a piece of pink quartz-hard material is natural rather than synthetic, and you cannot confirm that an evenly coloured piece is undyed just because no pooling is visible — home examination eliminates and does not confirm.

The realistic finding for most rose quartz tools: it is hard, it is brittle, it is very probably quartz of some origin, and the more strikingly pink it is, the more of that colour was somebody’s decision.
